More than circulation

A staircase can become the light-filled heart of a home.

We treat the staircase as an architectural room rather than simply a route between floors. Positioned carefully within the plan, it can organise the home, create long views and carry daylight from rooflights and upper-level windows into the spaces below.

Each stair is designed to feel comfortable and natural to use. The rise, going, width, landings, handrails and balustrades are considered together with the surrounding rooms, so the journey from floor to floor feels generous, calm and connected.

Light, movement and material

Designed as part of the whole house.

A well-placed staircase can open the centre of a deep plan, connect living spaces visually and give every landing a sense of purpose. Daylight from above changes throughout the day, animating walls, treads and balustrades while reducing the feeling of enclosure.

Material gives each stair its character. Stone can provide weight and permanence; timber introduces warmth; glass preserves views and daylight; finely detailed metalwork adds rhythm and delicacy. These elements are resolved as one composition with the architecture and interiors.

Comfort remains fundamental. The geometry, headroom, handrail and resting points are developed with care, creating stairs that are pleasurable to move through and that make arrival on each floor feel intuitive.

One element, many roles

A comfortable journey shaped by architecture.

01

Bring in daylight

Aligning stairs with rooflights, windows and double-height spaces allows natural light to reach deep into the plan and connect several levels.

02

Make movement effortless

Carefully judged proportions, generous landings and clear sightlines create a comfortable and intuitive route through the home.

03

Celebrate material and craft

Stone, timber, glass and metalwork are brought together with precise detailing so the staircase contributes to the character of the whole interior.
