Rutland Gardens
The complete renovation of a historic townhouse, combining careful conservation with a new basement and finely resolved contemporary interiors.
Heritage renewed
A listed Knightsbridge townhouse carefully reworked for contemporary life.
Rutland Gardens is the comprehensive renovation of a Grade II Listed property in Knightsbridge. The project restores the character and clarity of the original townhouse while introducing a new basement and a more generous sequence of spaces suited to modern family life.
Historic fabric and proportions remain central to the design. Restored plasterwork, fireplaces, joinery and the sweeping stair are set against precise contemporary interventions, allowing each new element to feel calm, purposeful and respectful of the building’s architectural significance.
Continuity from old to new
Conservation and contemporary design held in balance.
The plan is organised as a sequence of connected rooms, with arched openings and glazed doors carrying light and long views through the house. Period details provide rhythm and continuity; bespoke timber joinery, richly veined stone and restrained metalwork introduce a contemporary layer with its own quiet identity.
The new basement expands the accommodation without altering the established presence of the listed building. A carefully detailed stair links the lower level to the house above, while the courtyard draws daylight, planting and a sense of openness into the new spaces.
Delivery was undertaken in close collaboration with Cheyne Construction. The relationship between architect and contractor was fundamental to coordinating the listed fabric, new structure, services and exacting interior details as one coherent project.
